European Specialty Exam in Gastroenterology & Hepatology

I trained in the Wessex region and qualified as a Gastroenterology Consultant in 2009. My research led me to develop a great understanding of gastrointestinal inflammation and cancer, as demonstrated by my PhD in this field.

I am an expert endoscopist, with a specialist interest in complex colonoscopy polypectomy and ERCP. I am faculty member for the basic skills, upskilling and polypectomy course in colonoscopy, and run regional and national ERCP courses.

Additionally, I am the Divisional Director of Medicine at the Royal United Hospital in Bath, where I perform all facets of a gastroenterology consultant on a daily basis.

Education is a passion of mine, and I am a visiting lecturer at the University of Bath, the Bristol Academy and the University of South Wales.

After graduating from the University of Glasgow in 2010 with MBChB Honours, I completed the Academic Foundation Programme (Medical Education) in Northern Ireland. I went on to obtain a Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Education (QUB) with Distinction, and MRCP(UK).

I am currently a Specialty Trainee in Gastroenterology/GIM. My main interest is in Hepatology and I have recently completed a Fellowship in Advanced Hepatology and Liver Transplantation in St Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin. I completed the European Specialty Exam in Gastroenterology and Hepatology in 2018, passing at first attempt. I used StudyPRN to aid my revision, and found the questions to be reflective of those asked in the exam.

I completed my MBChB from the University of Glasgow (2006), followed by the MRCP UK (2011) and passed my Gastroenterology SCE (2017). Currently, I’m working as an NIHR Clinical Research Fellow at the Royal Surrey County Hospital.

Throughout my clinical experience, I have been responsible for both inpatient and outpatient care, covering the spectrum of GI disease presentation. I’ve performed regular independent upper GI lists, and am JAG accredited in Upper GI endoscopy.

Additionally, I’m experienced in specialist nutrition and hepatology service, and have developed skills in therapeutic endoscopy with banding of oesophageal varices, APC, injection, heater probe use, balloon dilation and stent insertion (oesophageal and duodenal).

I'm the current Gastroenterology Training Programme Director for the Northwest Deanery-Health Education England and also the Academic as well as the ePortfolio Lead for the Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Joint Royal College of Physicians Training Board-Speciality Advisory Committee (SAC).

My hospital job is a Gastroenterology Consultant at the University Hospitals of Morecambe NHS Foundation Trust, Royal Lancaster Infirmary. I've previously enjoyed an Honorary Consultant in Hepatology placement at the Liver transplantation department in Queen Elizabeth Hospital-Birmingham Liver Unit. I started my Gastroenterology and hepatology experience by working as a fellow in the Liver Transplant Unit at St James's University Hospital in Leeds after completing a 12 month Inflammatory Bowel Disease fellow job before joining Northwest-Deanery.

My special interests in Gastroenterology and Hepatology include acute liver failure, metabolic liver disease, autoimmune hepatitis, portal hypertension, liver cirrhosis, and Hepatobiliary Advanced Endoscopy. I am a (JAG) accredited GI endoscopy Trainer and IMPACT instructor, as well as a GMC-approved trainer. I have more than 40 published Abstracts, Meta-Analyisis, Systematic reviews, Literature Reviews, Original Researches, and case reports.

As a hospital consultant, teacher, question writer, and MRCP PACES examiner, I am progressive in building daily practices towards learning and working with cross-functional teams for an enduring commitment to lifelong learning.

I have 18 years of experience in internal medicine, including 10 years in the field of gastroenterology. After graduating in 2002, I completed my residency in internal medicine at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Center and continued on for a second fellowship in gastroenterology. Currently, I work as an Associate Professor of Gastroenterology at CMH Lahore Medical College, and in addition to patient care, I am involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. My research interest is in gastroenterology in general with a special interest in hepatology. I chose StudyPRN, as I find it a thoroughly professional and outstanding resource, which can help bolster a medical professional’s mastery of gastroenterology and assist them in their professional examinations.

I am an academic gastroenterologist and clinical lead of upper GI services at Cardiff & Vale University Health Board. In addition, I’m an honorary senior clinical lecturer at Swansea University and have extensive experience in teaching gastroenterology at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

I am a board-certified Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist, currently teaching and working in Brazil. My areas of interest and research include cirrhosis and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and I work as a principal investigator for phase 2 and 3 studies on new molecules for IBD. I also research the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning to predict outcomes in Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

I am currently working on a PhD in Pathology. I am also an author of multiple indexed articles on my research.

After completing my M.B.B.S from the PSG Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (2010), I achieved my MRCP(UK) in June 2015, followed by the European Specialty Examination in Gastroenterology and Hepatology in May 2018.

I did my Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship (2019-2020) at the University Hospital Llandough and I am a JAG accredited trainer in endoscopy and colonoscopy. I am currently working as a Specialty Trainee (ST6) in Gastroenterology at the University Hospital of Wales.

I have been a tutor and have authored modules for both the MSc and PgDip in Gastroenterology and Acute Medicine with the University of South Wales. I have thoroughly enjoyed writing practice questions for StudyPRN. I am a BSG and BASL Trainee Member, and a member of both the Royal College of Physicians and the Society of Physicians in Wales.

I am Dr Mahasen Akram Elshaer, a Consultant in Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Endoscopy from Egypt. I am a member of The Federation of Royal Colleges UK and have passed the PACES and ESEGH examinations. I am passionate about Advanced Endoscopy, EUS, ERCP, 3rd space endoscopy, and Bariatric procedures.

My mission is to pave the way for younger colleagues by sharing my knowledge with the next generation of medical practitioners. Through my passion for medical education, I also assist with admin for a GIT Study Group as well as authoring for StudyPRN.

I am a consultant Gastroenterologist & Hepatologist at Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust, qualifying from UCL and the Royal Free Medical School, London. I trained as a Gastroenterologist in Surrey and Sussex and gained further experience at the Royal Free Hospital, including the Sheila Sherlock Liver Centre in London and at Yale Medical Centre (USA). I have also completed a 12-month fellowship at the ENETS Centre of Excellence at the Royal Free Hospital and gained more experience in the management of gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumours.

I was selected for the highly prestigious advanced training program in Hepatology (liver disease) through a national competitive process, which allowed me to train at King’s College Hospital and its Liver Intensive Care unit, as well as at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington (Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust). Upon completion of my training, I achieved triple accreditation in Gastroenterology, Hepatology and General Internal Medicine.

I have studied a PhD in liver disease and have presented my work in various locoregional, national and international meetings. I have written more than 25 peer-reviewed articles on all aspects of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Nutrition and Cancer, which have been published in high-impact journals including Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology.

I graduated in 2004 from Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Medical Schools, London. After gaining comprehensive medical experience working around London and the South East, I entered Gastroenterology and General Medicine specialist training in 2008. I spent 3 years at Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospitals where I undertook clinical research into the Genetics and Microbiology of Crohn’s disease and inflammatory bowel disease. During my career, I have been fortunate to undertake clinical attachments in Australia, India, and Japan.

I have published over 30 peer-reviewed articles, authored many abstracts at international meetings and written a textbook chapter. Additionally, I have participated in a novel international Crohn’s disease treatment trial as a sub-investigator and am currently involved in clinical research.

I recently finished my registrar training at King’s College Hospital, and in 2016 I was appointed as a full-time Consultant in Gastroenterology at Kingston Hospital.
